A new option for our patients to monitor glucose levels continuously
Here at DETS, we love to provide options for our patients so together with our providers, we can determine the best system for continuously monitoring glucose levels for you. We are always watching for new and improved technology when it comes to managing diabetes. I just came across an article that the FDA has given approval for the Freestyle Libre 3 Reader. Users now can choose between the reader, or mobile app to track glucose levels. No longer having a need to scan the sensor to track levels. I checked in with our Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialists and wanted to gather their thoughts about the article, and here is what Courtney said:
“Finally, Abbott comes out with a reader! This is great news for Medicare recipients as Medicare requires their users to utilize the reader (or at least to receive one) when a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) is ordered. Sadly, Dexcom G7 beat them to it. Many Medicare users switched to the G7 because it had a reader and was approved pretty close to its FDA clearance date. We like our patients to have options, so this is great news for the diabetes community.”
Stephanie, another Diabetes Care & Education Specialist in the office adds:
“This is wonderful news for our Medicare patients who have not been able to benefit from the latest FreeStyle Libre 3 model which no longer requires them to manually scan their sensors for glucose readings. Less burden for patients and more data for providers! This is a big win for Medicare patients and therefore, a big win for most other insurance plans who follow CMS guidelines.
